Olimpic games

The competitions lasted five days. The winners in each kind of sport or art got on olive wreath which was the highest honor. When the champions came back home, the people used to greet them with flowers. The Greeks often put statues of their champions in the city square, because they brought glory to their native city.

For a long time, from 394 till 1896, there were no Olympic Games. On 23 June, 1894, Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee in a ceremony held at the University of Sorbonne in Paris. Demetrius Vikelas from Greece became the first president of the IOC. Two years later, in 1896, the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in Athens. The Games have always been as exciting as they were in ancient Olympia.

The capitals of many countries have been Olympic cities — Athens, Paris, London, Berlin, Helsinki, Rome, Tokyo, Mexico, Montreal and some others.

The Olympic Games are always a great festival of sport, youth and beauty.

The History of the London Police
Today there are policemen everywhere but in 1700 London had no policemen at all. A few old men used to protect the city streets at night and they were not paid very much.
About three hundred years ago London was starting to get bigger. The city was very dirty and many people were poor. There were so many thieves who stole money in the streets that people stayed in their homes so much as possible.
In 1750 Henry Fielding started to pay a group of people to stop thieves. They were like policemen and were called ‘Bow Street Runners’ because they were working near Bow street.
Fifty years later there were 120 Bow Runners but London had become very big and needed more policemen. So, in 1829 the first metropolitan (or London) Police Force was started with 3000 officers.
Most of them were working on foot but a few rode horses. Until 1920 all the police in London were men. Today London police are quite well paid and for the few police officers who still ride horses the pay is even better than for the others.

Choosing an Occupation
One of the most common and difficult problems a young man faces is
deciding what to do about a career. There are individuals who at the age of
six "know" that they want to be doctors, or pilots, or fire fighters.
  But the
majority of us are not sure about the future career. Choosing an occupation
takes time, and there are a lot of things you have to think about while
deciding what you'd like to do. Fortunately, there are a lot of people you
can turn on for advice and help in making your choice. At most schools,
there are teachers who are professionally qualified to counsel you and to
give detailed information about job qualifications. And you can talk over
your ideas with family members and friends who are always ready to listen
and to offer suggestions. But if other people help you to make a decision,
self-evaluation is an important part of the decision-making process.

English cuisine
English people have a special cuisine. Traditional English dishes include fish and chips, roast beef, steak, pudding and some others. It’s natural that all types of food can be found in English restaurants nowadays. For example, fans of Japanese food will easily find sushi in English cities, fans of Italian food, will easily find all sorts of pasta and pizza in England. However, many people want to try traditional British cuisine when visiting England. For breakfast English people prefer either oatmeal or cereal with milk, fried eggs with bacon, a glass of orange juice or a cup of fresh coffee. During lunch many people are away at work, or at school, so they carry their lunch with them. It usually consists of a couple of delicious sandwiches with ham, cheese and fresh vegetables, and a small pack of juice. Many Englishmen drink 5 o’clock tea with cookies. It’s a kind of English siesta. For dinner families usually gather around the dining-table to chat and to share some tasty dishes. Among them steaks or fish, steamed vegetables, rice, fresh salad, and a glass of wine or beer, depending on tastes. Children drink either water, or tea. English families often go out for an evening meal, especially on Friday nights. Traditional English cuisine contains many interesting recipes, but probably the most famous of all is “Fish & Chips”. This dish consists of fried chops from fish and French fries. On special occasions English people often serve roast turkey and traditional pudding. Many people tend to criticize the English cuisine, nevertheless(хоча), it has a certain charm and value.

Food
Food - Їжа - це загальне слово, що стосується всього, що ви можете з'їсти. Банан – це food. Гамбургер – це food. Салат – це food. Прості продукти (наприклад, шматок хліба) та складні страви (наприклад, тушковані морепродукти з різними інгредієнтами) належать до загальної категорії – FOOD. У повсякденній англійській мові ви часто чутимете такі

Dish
Слово DISH має два значення.

1) Посуд - фізичний об'єкт, що використовується для зберігання, приготування та подачі їжі. Фраза washing the dishes передбачає миття тарілки, миски, каструлі, сковорідки, ложки, виделки і т.д.

2) Страва – приготовлена ​​їжа, наприклад лазіння або азіатський салат. Якщо ви великою компанією друзів збираєтеся на якесь святкування і заздалегідь домовляєтеся, що хтось принесе салат, пиріг, холодець і т.д. Кожна окрема страва це – DISH.
MEAL
Слово MEAL відноситься до часу або нагоди вживання їжі. Більшість людей їдять тричі на день – сніданок, обід та вечерю. Meal визначає всю їжу, з'їдену під час одного з цих періодів. Так що один прийом їжі (meal) може включати кілька страв (dishes). Вечеря – це MEAL. Курка, рис, салат та морозиво – DISHES.

Big/heavy meal – важкий (з великою кількістю їжі) прийом їжі
Light meal – легке перекушування
Elaborate meal – вишуканий прийом їжі
Simple meal – їда з простих (у приготуванні) страв.

Множина іменника

Правило 1. Додаємо -S

Множина більшості англійських іменників формується з додаванням закінчення -s. Це правило актуально для всіх іменників, крім тих, які закінчуються на -s, -x, -z, -sh, -ch, is, -us, – y, і ще кількох винятків.

  • cat → cats
  • pen → pens
  • student → students

Правило 2. Додаємо ES

Множина іменників із закінченнями -s, -x, -z, -sh або -ch формується за допомогою додавання -es:

  • bus → buses
  • box → boxes
  • wish → wishes
  • watch → watches

Правило 3. Додаємо -IES

Множина більшості іменників із закінченням -y перед якою стоїть приголосна, то відбувається зміна закінчень. Замість у ставиться -ies:

  • fairy → fairies
  • candy → candies
  • dummy → dummies
Якщо іменник закінчується на -y, а перед цією літерою йде голосна, то додається закінчення -s:

a key (ключ) – keys (ключі)

Ukrainian Cuisine 
Ukrainian cuisine is a characteristic style of cooking, practice and traditions associated with Ukrainian culture, culinary art in Ukraine. A lot of food products are subjected to a complex heat processing - at first they are fried or boiled, and then stewed or baked. This is the most distinctive feature of Ukrainian cuisine.
This complex heat processing allows to preserve the aroma of the dishes and gives them juiciness. Especially tasty and healthy are the dishes of meat and vegetables - cabbage rolls with meat, Volynian krucheniki, beef larded with beets, etc
 Dishes are known for their variety and high taste qualities. Ukrainian cuisine includes hundreds of recipes: borscht and pampushki, flat cakes and dumplings, mushroom sauce, banosh, vareniki and sausages, drinks from fruits and honey, etc. Some dishes have a centuries-old history, for example, Ukrainian borscht.

Food - Їжа - це загальне слово, що стосується всього, що ви можете з'їсти. Банан – це food. Гамбургер – це food. Салат – це food. Dish
Слово DISH має два значення.

1) Посуд - фізичний об'єкт, що використовується для зберігання, приготування та подачі їжі. Фраза washing the dishes передбачає миття тарілки, миски, каструлі, сковорідки, ложки, виделки і т.д.

2) Страва – приготовлена ​​їжа, наприклад лазіння або азіатський салат. Якщо ви великою компанією друзів збираєтеся на якесь святкування і заздалегідь домовляєтеся, що хтось принесе салат, пиріг, холодець і т.д. Кожна окрема страва це – DISH.

MEAL

Education in USA

The American system of school education differs from the systems in other countries. There are state public schools, private elementary schools and private secondary schools. Public schools are free and private schools are feepaying. Each state has its own system of public schools.
Elementary education begins at the age of six or seven, when a child goes to the first grade (form). At the age of sixteen schoolchildren leave the elementary school and may continue their education at one of the secondary schools or high schools, as they call them.
The programme of studies in the school includes English, Arithmetic, Geography, History of the USA, Natural Sciences and, besides, Physical Training, Singing, Drawing, Wood or Metal Work, etc. Sometimes they learn a foreign language and general history. Beside giving general education some high schools teach subjects useful to those who hope to find jobs in industry and agriculture or who want to enter colleges or universities.
After graduating from secondary schools a growing number of Americans go on to higher education. The students do not take the same courses. During the first two years they follow a basic programme. It means that every student must select at least one course from each of the basic fields of study: English, Natural Sciences, Modern Languages, History or Physical Training. After the first two years every student can select subjects according to his professional interest.
The National Government gives no direct financial aid to the institutions of higher education. Students must pay a tuition fee. This creates a financial hardship for some people. Many students have to work to pay their expenses. The Americans place a high value on education. That’s why Kennedy said, “Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education”

Education in Great Britain
In Great Britain children begin to go to school at the age of five. First they study at infant schools. In these schools they learn to draw with coloured pencils and paints. They also make figures out of plasticine and work with paper and glue. They play much because they are very young. Later they begin to learn letters and read, write and count.

At the age of seven English schoolchildren go to junior schools. They do many subjects: English and Maths, History and Music, Natural History and Drawing, Handicrafts, French and Latin.
They do not go to school as early as we do, but they stay there longer. The first lesson usually starts at 9 o’clock. There are 3 lessons with short breaks of 10 minutes between them and then an hour break for lunch. After lunch they have two more lessons which are over by half past three.
If you have a look at an English pupil’s school record, you will see that the marks in it differ from the marks we have. Our schoolchildren get marks from 1 to 5 (12). At English school there are marks from 1 up to 10 and at some schools from 1 up to 100.
Junior school ends at the age of 11 when pupils take the Eleven Plus examination and then secondary school begins. At the age of 16 schoolchildren take their exams. Only 45 per cent continue with fulltime education after 16. The rest go to work or join employment training schemes.

Ukraine is a beautiful country with rich history and wonderful nature. It is a large country that shares borders with Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova.

Ukraine is famous for its historical monuments and different places of interest. It has seven World Heritage Sites, including the 11th century Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, the city of Lviv, which is called Ukraine’s cultural capital, and the primeval beech forests of the Carpathians. The country is also known for its strong tradition of folk art. Due to Ukraine’s location, its culture has been influenced by the cultures of both western Europe and Russia.
People in Ukraine speak Ukrainian.  A lot of tourists come here from other countries to spend their holidays. Usually they all try traditional Ukrainian food, such as borscht, cabbage rolls, varenyky (dumplings) and studynets (a form of headcheese).
I have been to Ukraine twice and I would like to come again because there is so much more to explore!

Education in Great Britain
In Great Britain children begin to go to school at the age of five. First they study at infant schools. In these schools they learn to draw with coloured pencils and paints. They also make figures out of plasticine and work with paper and glue. They play much because they are very young. Later they begin to learn letters and read, write and count.

At the age of seven English schoolchildren go to junior schools. They do many subjects: English and Maths, History and Music, Natural History and Drawing, Handicrafts, French and Latin.
They do not go to school as early as we do, but they stay there longer. The first lesson usually starts at 9 o’clock. There are 3 lessons with short breaks of 10 minutes between them and then an hour break for lunch. After lunch they have two more lessons which are over by half past three.
If you have a look at an English pupil’s school record, you will see that the marks in it differ from the marks we have. Our schoolchildren get marks from 1 to 5 (12). At English school there are marks from 1 up to 10 and at some schools from 1 up to 100.
Junior school ends at the age of 11 when pupils take the Eleven Plus examination and then secondary school begins. At the age of 16 schoolchildren take their exams. Only 45 per cent continue with fulltime education after 16. The rest go to work or join employment training schemes.

Прислівник (Adverb) – це самостійна частина мови, що вказує на певну ознаку дії, ознаку іншої ознаки або обставини, в яких відбувається дія.  В більшості випадків прислівники означують дієслова, але вони також вживаються з прикметниками або іншими прислівниками. Вони відповідають на питання  «як?», «куди?», «де?», «коли?» тощо і в реченні виступають в якості обставини.

  • I can run and swim fast. – Я можу швидко бігати та плавати.
  • Mark is a very nice person. – Марк - дуже хороша людина.
  • Fleur’s school is pretty far from here. – Школа Флер знаходиться достатньо далеко.

Види прислівників за значенням

Прислівники англійської мови за своїм значенням поділяються на прислівники способу дії, прислівники місця, часу, прислівники ступеня та міри, частотності, впевненості, а також інші види прислівників, що у реченні виконують різноманітні функції. 

Прислівники способу дії

Прислівники способу дії (adverbs of manner) вказують на те, як, яким способом виконується дія. Такі прислівники відповідають на питання  «як?» і в більшості випадків вживаються з дієсловами. Більшість прислівників способу дії утворилися від відповідних прикметників за допомогою суфікса -ly.

  • accurately – точно, акуратно
  • badly – погано
  • carefully – уважно, обережно
  • quickly – швидко
  • slowly – повільно
  • well – добре, гарно
  • fast – швидко
  • hard – тяжко, жорстко
  • so – так
  • straight – прямо, просто, відверто

Правило 1. Додаємо -S

Множина більшості англійських іменників формується з додаванням закінчення -s. Це правило актуально для всіх іменників, крім тих, які закінчуються на -s, -x, -z, -sh, -ch, is, -us, – y, і ще кількох винятків.

  • Правило 2. Додаємо ES

Множина іменника

Правило 1. Додаємо -S

Множина більшості англійських іменників формується з додаванням закінчення -s. Це правило актуально для всіх іменників, крім тих, які закінчуються на -s, -x, -z, -sh, -ch, is, -us, – y, і ще кількох винятків.

  • cat → cats
  • pen → pens
  • student → students

  • Правило 2. Додаємо ES

Множина іменників із закінченнями -s, -x, -z, -sh або -ch формується за допомогою додавання -es:

  • bus → buses
  • box → boxes
  • wish → wishes
  • watch → watches

Правило 3. Додаємо -IES

Множина більшості іменників із закінченням -y перед якою стоїть приголосна, то відбувається зміна закінчень. Замість у ставиться -ies:

  • fairy → fairies
  • candy → candies
  • dummy → dummies
Якщо іменник закінчується на -y, а перед цією літерою йде голосна, то додається закінчення -s:

Дієслово “Do” вживається щоб розповісти про бойові мистецтва, гімнастику чи спортивні вправи загалом. Наприклад: do judo, do karate, do athletics, do  gymnastics, do aerobics, do exercise.

👉 Дієслово “Play”  вживається коли ми говоримо про командні види спорту, спорт в якому потрібен м’яч, змагання між двома командами або гравцями, настільні чи інші ігри. Наприклад: play basketball, play hockey, play chess, play tennis, play pocker, play baseball.

Ukrainian Cuisine 
Ukrainian cuisine is a characteristic style of cooking, practice and traditions associated with Ukrainian culture, culinary art in Ukraine. A lot of food products are subjected to a complex heat processing - at first they are fried or boiled, and then stewed or baked. This is the most distinctive feature of Ukrainian cuisine.
This complex heat processing allows to preserve the aroma of the dishes and gives them juiciness. Especially tasty and healthy are the dishes of meat and vegetables - cabbage rolls with meat, Volynian krucheniki, beef larded with beets, etc
 Dishes are known for their variety and high taste qualities. Ukrainian cuisine includes hundreds of recipes: borscht and pampushki, flat cakes and dumplings, mushroom sauce, banosh, vareniki and sausages, drinks from fruits and honey, etc. Some dishes have a centuries-old history, for example, Ukrainian borscht.

Food
Food - Їжа - це загальне слово, що стосується всього, що ви можете з'їсти. Банан – це food. Гамбургер – це food. Салат – це food. Прості продукти (наприклад, шматок хліба) та складні страви (наприклад, тушковані морепродукти з різними інгредієнтами) належать до загальної категорії – FOOD. У повсякденній англійській мові ви часто чутимете такі

Dish
Слово DISH має два значення.

1) Посуд - фізичний об'єкт, що використовується для зберігання, приготування та подачі їжі. Фраза washing the dishes передбачає миття тарілки, миски, каструлі, сковорідки, ложки, виделки і т.д.

2) Страва – приготовлена ​​їжа, наприклад лазіння або азіатський салат. Якщо ви великою компанією друзів збираєтеся на якесь святкування і заздалегідь домовляєтеся, що хтось принесе салат, пиріг, холодець і т.д. Кожна окрема страва це – DISH.

MEAL
Слово MEAL відноситься до часу або нагоди вживання їжі. Більшість людей їдять тричі на день – сніданок, обід та вечерю. Meal визначає всю їжу, з'їдену під час одного з цих періодів. Так що один прийом їжі (meal) може включати кілька страв (dishes). Вечеря – це MEAL. Курка, рис, салат та морозиво – DISHES.

Big/heavy meal – важкий (з великою кількістю їжі) прийом їжі
Light meal – легке перекушування
Elaborate meal – вишуканий прийом їжі
Simple meal – їда з простих (у приготуванні) страв.

The painting the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci is believed to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, who was a spouse of a Florentine merchant.

In the portrait we can see a fairly young woman sitting half-turned on a chair. Her gaze is fixed on us. There is a scarcely perceptible smile on her face. Her wavy hair falls on her shoulders. Her head is covered with a dark veil. Her face, brightly lit, is framed with dark objects, which brings our attention to it.


The woman is sitting upright with her arms folded. She is wearing a deep-green dress. Her shoulders are covered with a shawl.

Looking at the portrait we can see that the woman is sitting on the balcony. Behind her back there is a desolate land with a lake. In the background snow-covered mountains are seen.

The portrait is considered to be one of the best specimens of a portrait genrе.

One of my favorite painters is Leonardo da Vinci. Everyone agrees this painter was one of the most brilliant painters. Apparently, his picture “The Last Supper” is the most known painting in the world.

In addition, he was a great inventor. Leonardo invented the military tank, the wheelbarrow, and roller bearings. Plans for dozens of machines and weapons were made by him.

He also experimented with submarine and airplane models. Besides, Leonardo was great as an engineer and scientist. He was also a musician, a poet, and a sculptor. Undoubtedly, Leonardo da Vinci can justly be called a genius.

The artist was born in Vinci, the village in Italy. Being a child, he lived with the father’s parents. When his father understood that Leonardo was keen in painting, he decided to send the boy to an excellent teacher and painter. One day Leonardo painted a wonderful angel in his teacher’s picture. “You are greater than me”, noticed the teacher.

When Leonardo was 25 years old, he started to paint independently, first in Florence, Milan and Venice, and then – in France.

His famous picture “The Last Supper” is situated on the wall of the chapel in Milan. One of the famous Leonardo’s paintings is “Mona Liza”. This picture represents a woman with an intriguing smile. Now it represents one of the most wonderful treasures in the Louvre.

Leonardo’s pictures are so beautiful that they are like a beautiful music, hard to describe. The faces of the people on his pictures are full of expression. Leonardo used effects on light and shade in the new way, making people look very lifelike.
